What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common but poorly understood disorder of the facial skin, estimated to affect well over 16 million Americans, and most of them don’t know it. Rosacea is becoming increasingly widespread and the majority of rosacea patients know little about its signs and symptoms prior to their diagnosis.

Because of Rosacea’s red-faced, acne-like effects on personal appearance, it can cause significant psychological and social distress.

Rosacea Signs & Symptoms

While the cause of rosacea is unknown and there is no cure, there are effective treatments to control and manage rosacea. It’s important to get appropriate treatment before the signs and symptoms become increasingly severe:

  • Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead.
  • Small visible blood vessels on the face.
  • Bumps or pimples on the face.
  • Watery or irritated eyes.

Rosacea is a harmless condition, but it may cause you to be self-conscious or embarrassed. It can be described in many ways. Symptoms may include redness of the face, blushing or flushing easily or excessive spider-like blood vessels (telangiectasia) on the face. In more extreme cases, a red nose(called a bulbous nose), acne-like skin bumps that may ooze or crust, burning or heat sensation in the face, irritated, bloodshot or watery eyes may also be among the symptoms. Rosacea can not be cured, but it can be controlled.

Causes of Rosacea

The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it is believed to be due to some combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Certain factors can trigger or aggravate rosacea:

  • Hot foods or beverages
  • Spicy foods
  • Alcohol
  • Temperature extremes
  • Sunlight
  • Stress, anger or embarrassment
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Hot baths or saunas
  • Corticosteroids, such as prednisone
  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications
